They live high up in the canopy layer of tropical forests. These monkeys belong to a group called Saimiri. This name comes from the Tupi language. In Tupi, 'sai' means monkey and 'mirim' means small. Most species live in the Amazon rainforest. However, some live in Costa Rica and Panama. They have short fur that is black on their shoulders. Their backs and limbs are often yellow or orange. Their faces are white, which gives them a special look.

Staying cool is a very important job for these monkeys. They live in places that are very hot and humid. Squirrel monkeys can only sweat through the palms of their hands and the soles of their feet. This is not enough to keep them cool by itself. To help, they use a trick called urine washing. They urinate on their hands and rub it over their feet. As the liquid evaporates, it cools their bodies down. They also move to shaded areas to stay out of the sun.

Scientists have studied these monkeys for a long time. A famous squirrel monkey named Miss Baker even traveled into space. She was part of the United States space program. Luckily, she returned home safely. Researchers also study how squirrel monkeys see colors. This helps them understand vision problems in humans. In monkeys, color vision depends on genes on the X chromosome. Males usually see fewer colors than females. By studying them, scientists can learn how to help people see better.

There are five recognized species of squirrel monkeys. They are split into two main groups. You can tell them apart by the white markings above their eyes. The S. sciureus group has markings shaped like a pointed arch. The S. boliviensis group has markings shaped like a rounded arch. Some species are doing well, but others are in trouble. The Central American squirrel monkey and the black squirrel monkey are both considered vulnerable. This means they face risks in the wild.

Squirrel monkeys are very social animals. They live in large groups that can have 500 members. These monkeys are omnivores, which means they eat many things. They mostly eat fruit and insects. They also eat seeds, leaves, flowers, and even eggs. They use their long tails to help them balance while they move. Unlike some other monkeys, they do not use their tails to climb. Instead, the tail acts like a balancing pole.
