Capuchin monkeys are very smart animals from the New World. They live in many tropical forests across Central and South America. You might find them in wet lowland forests or dry forests. Some live as far south as northern Argentina. These monkeys are often seen in movies and television shows. People sometimes call them "organ grinder" monkeys.

These monkeys have a very large brain for their body size. Their brains have complex wiring that helps them in many ways. This intelligence helps them live in social groups and find food. They are omnivores, which means they eat many different things. They eat plants like fruit, seeds, and leaves. They also eat animals like frogs, crabs, and even other primates.

Long ago, Portuguese explorers found these monkeys in the Americas. They thought the monkeys looked like friars in brown robes. These friars were part of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin. The monkeys have colors like black, brown, or white. The name "capuchin" comes from these hooded robes. The scientific name for the group is Cebus. This name comes from a Greek word meaning a long-tailed monkey.

Scientists have learned a lot about how these monkeys change. In 2011, Jessica Lynch Alfaro and her team studied their genes. They found that two types of capuchins split apart 6.2 million years ago. One group is called the gracile capuchins. The other group is called the robust capuchins. The creation of the Amazon River may have caused this split. Robust capuchins have jaws that are good for opening hard nuts.

Capuchins are famous for being great at using tools. Some monkeys use heavy stones to crack open hard nuts. They might carry a stone from a mile away to a flat rock. Young monkeys must watch the adults to learn this skill. It can take eight years to master using these tools. They also use nature to stay healthy in the forest. During mosquito season, they crush millipedes to rub on their backs. This works as a natural way to keep bugs away.
