Gherman Stepanovich Titov was a pioneering Soviet and Russian cosmonaut. He played a vital role in early human space exploration. On August 6, 1961, he launched aboard the Vostok 2 spacecraft. This mission made him the second human to orbit the Earth. He followed Yuri Gagarin, who flew on Vostok 1. Counting American suborbital flights, Titov was the fourth person in space.

At the time of his launch, he was nearly 26 years old. He held the record for the youngest professional astronaut for many years. He remained the youngest person to fly in space until 2021. That record was eventually broken by Oliver Daemen, who was 18. However, Titov remains the youngest person to fly in Earth orbit.

Titov's mission was essential for understanding human biology in space. His flight lasted 25.3 hours and included 17 orbits of the Earth. He proved that humans could live and work in orbit. During the flight, he became the first person to sleep in space. He experienced the effects of microgravity, which is the absence of normal gravity. He woke up to find his arms floating in the air. To sleep more comfortably, he used a security belt to hold his limbs. He ended up sleeping 30 minutes longer than the flight plan predicted.

Beyond sleeping, Titov experienced the first case of space sickness. This is a form of motion sickness caused by the space environment. He became the first person to vomit while in orbit. This experience provided important data about how the human body reacts to zero gravity. After landing near Krasny Kut, he experienced a fit of euphoria. He also engaged in behaviors that some thought were side effects of space sickness. These included excessive drinking and a love of fast cars. However, later testing showed these behaviors were not caused by his time in space.

Titov was also a pioneer in space photography and cinematography. He was the first human photographer in space. He took the first manual photographs from orbit. While a V-2 rocket took a picture of Earth in 1946, Titov was the first person to do it himself. He also used a professional Konvas-Avtomat movie camera. He filmed the Earth for ten minutes during his mission. These images provided the world with new views of our planet.

Titov's early life led him to the stars through military training. He was born in the village of Verkhneye Zhilino. He attended the Stalingrad Military Aviation School to become a pilot. He was selected for cosmonaut training in 1960. After his historic flight, he worked for the Soviet space program. He trained to be the first pilot of an orbital spaceplane for the Spiral project. His career as a test pilot ended after the 1968 death of Yuri Gagarin. The Soviet government decided not to risk their second cosmonaut.

In his later years, Titov moved into politics and leadership. He served in the Soviet Air Force and reached the rank of colonel-general. In post-Soviet Russia, he became a member of the State Duma. He represented the Communist Party of the Russian Federation in 1995. He also proposed that the government celebrate Cosmonautics Day on April 12. This date honors the anniversary of Gagarin's flight. Titov died of cardiac arrest in Moscow on September 20, 2000. He was 65 years old.

Titov's legacy is preserved through many honors and namesakes. He was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union. He received many other awards, including two Orders of Lenin. His name is used to identify celestial and terrestrial locations. There is a Titov crater on the far side of the Moon. There is also a Titov Island in Ha Long Bay. A museum dedicated to him opened in his native village in 2011. His life remains a key part of the history of space travel.
