He is also a recognized musician and author. His career spans 35 years of service in the military and space exploration. Hadfield gained international fame for his work in orbit and his use of social media. He was the first Canadian to perform an extravehicular activity, which is a spacewalk, in outer space. He also served as the commander of the International Space Station (ISS). This role placed him at the center of global scientific cooperation.

His journey toward space began with a deep interest in flight. As a nine-year-old, he watched the Apollo 11 Moon landing on television. This event inspired his future ambitions. He grew his skills early as a member of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets. By age 15, he earned a glider pilot scholarship. By age 16, he earned a powered pilot scholarship. He later joined the Canadian Armed Forces. He spent 25 years as an Air Command fighter pilot.

During his military service, he flew more than 70 different types of aircraft.

To prepare for astronaut training, Hadfield completed rigorous academic programs. He earned a Bachelor of Engineering in mechanical engineering from the Royal Military College of Canada in 1982. He also conducted post-graduate research at the University of Waterloo. Later, he earned a Master of Science in aviation systems from the University of Tennessee Space Institute. His thesis focused on the high-angle attack aerodynamics of the F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet. This technical knowledge helped him become a test pilot. He tested experimental planes and worked on advanced propulsion systems.

He even piloted tests for the National Aerospace Plane's hydrogen propulsion engine.

In 1992, Hadfield was selected for the Canadian astronaut program. He was one of only four people chosen from 5,330 applicants. His first spaceflight occurred in November 1995 during mission STS-74. On this mission, he visited the Russian space station Mir. He was the first Canadian to operate the Canadarm in orbit. His second mission was STS-100 in April 2001. During this flight, he performed two spacewalks to help install the Canadarm2 robotic arm.

During one spacewalk, he spent a total of 14 hours and 50 minutes outside the spacecraft. This included traveling 10 times around the world.

His third major mission began in December 2012. He traveled to the ISS aboard the Soyuz TMA-07M spacecraft. This journey led to him becoming the first Canadian commander of the ISS. He led Expedition 35, which included a crew of five astronauts.

During this time, the crew conducted many scientific experiments. These studies focused on how low gravity impacts human biology. Hadfield also used this time to connect with people on Earth. He shared many photos of our planet through social media platforms.

While in orbit, Hadfield became a unique cultural figure. He played the guitar on the ISS to record music. One of his songs, "Jewel in the Night," was released on YouTube in late 2012. He also participated in the unveiling of new Canadian banknotes while in space.

He used his platform to make space exploration feel personal and accessible. His social media presence grew to include over 2,400,000 followers on Twitter. He worked with his son, Evan, to manage these digital communications. This allowed him to share both scientific facts and everyday life in orbit.

Hadfield's career connects many different fields of human achievement. His background in mechanical engineering supported his work as a flight engineer. His experience as a test pilot informed his work with NASA on shuttle operations. He even explored life underwater during the NEEMO 14 mission in 2010.
