Vostok 1 was a historic mission that achieved the first human orbital spaceflight in history.

Launched by the Soviet Union, this mission proved that humans could survive and function in space. It was a centerpiece of the Vostok programme. This programme was part of the Space Race between the Soviet Union and the United States. Both superpowers were competing to master spaceflight technology during the Cold War. The Soviet Union had already reached a major milestone in 1957 by launching Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite. Vostok 1 represented the next giant leap: putting a person into orbit around the Earth.

The mission relied on a complex sequence of mechanical steps to reach space. The Vostok 3KA space capsule was attached to a Vostok-K rocket. On 12 April 1961, the rocket launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome.

During the ascent, the four strap-on boosters used their propellant and dropped away. Shortly after, the payload shroud was released. This uncovered an optical orientation device, which is a tool used for navigation, located at the pilot's feet.

Finally, the rocket's core stage fell away, and the final rocket stage ignited. Once this stage finished its burn, the capsule separated and entered a stable orbit.

Because scientists were uncertain how weightlessness would affect a human, the spacecraft was designed for automatic control. Engineers and medical staff were unsure how a pilot might react to being without gravity. Consequently, they locked the manual controls to prevent the pilot from interfering with the flight. To ensure safety, a code to unlock these controls was placed in an onboard envelope.

Although the code was meant to be a secret for emergencies, the head of cosmonaut training, Nikolai Kamanin, gave the code (1-2-5) to Yuri Gagarin before the flight. The mission was monitored through a network of ground stations known as Command Points located within the Soviet Union.

The selection of the pilot was a highly secretive process. Yuri Gagarin was chosen as the primary cosmonaut for the mission. Gherman Titov and Grigori Nelyubov served as his backups. Gagarin had been a favorite among candidates for several months. However, the final decision rested with leaders like Nikolai Kamanin. Kamanin had even debated between Gagarin and Titov, noting that a stronger person might be needed for longer flights.

The secrecy was so intense that other candidates, such as Alexei Leonov, did not know who was selected until after the mission had already begun.

Preparation for the flight involved many specific and unusual details. To save weight, the capsule did not carry a backup retrorocket engine. Instead, it carried 13 days of provisions to allow for natural orbital decay if the main engines failed.

Gagarin's food was specially prepared to prevent crumbs from floating in the cabin. He ate items like liver meat puree and chocolate sauce from metal tubes, similar to toothpaste. Additionally, engineer Gherman Lebedev hand-painted the letters "СССР" on Gagarin's helmet. This was done to ensure the cosmonaut could be identified by his country upon landing and not mistaken for a spy.

The flight itself was a brief but intense journey that lasted 108 minutes.

Gagarin completed one full orbit around the Earth, skimming the upper atmosphere at his lowest point. During the flight, he observed the Earth through his viewport and reported that the visibility was good.

His physical condition was monitored, with his pulse recorded at 64 beats per minute shortly before launch. When it was time to return to Earth, Gagarin did not land inside the capsule. Instead, he ejected from the craft at a high altitude and used a parachute to reach the ground separately.

Vostok 1 was a vital step in the broader field of astronautics and space exploration. It demonstrated that the Vostok rocket family, which had undergone uncrewed tests like Korabl-Sputnik 4 and 5, was capable of carrying life. The success of the mission changed the trajectory of the Space Race. It provided the foundational data needed to understand how humans interact with the orbital environment. This mission paved the way for all future human spaceflight, proving that the Earth's orbit was no longer a barrier to human presence.
