Ghent University is a major research school in Belgium.

The university works in many different ways to help people learn. It has eleven faculties, which are large groups of study areas. These include things like Law, Medicine, and Science. Some faculties were added much later, like Economics in 1968. The school also runs the Zwijnaarde and Greenbridge science parks. It works with many other schools in Europe and around the world.
The history of the school began a long time ago. King William I founded it in 1817.
Language has been a big part of the school's story. In the beginning, students used Latin to study. Later, they switched to using French. In 1906, the school started teaching in Dutch. By 1930, it officially became the first Dutch-speaking university in Belgium. The school also had hard times during the World Wars. During World War I, the school was closed for a while. In 1991, the university gained more independence and changed its name to its current form.
Many famous people have studied or worked at Ghent University.
Ghent University, often called UGent, is a major public research institution. It is located in Ghent, in the East Flanders province of Belgium. As the second largest university in Belgium, it serves a massive community. Currently, the university supports 50,000 students and 9,000 staff members.
The university functions through a complex structure of specialized groups. It consists of eleven distinct faculties and over 130 individual departments. These faculties cover a wide range of subjects, from Law and Medicine to Applied Sciences. Some faculties are quite new, such as the Faculty of Politics and Social Sciences, added in 1992. To support scientific research, the university maintains the Zwijnaarde and Greenbridge science parks.
The history of Ghent University began before the nation of Belgium even existed. It was founded in 1817 by the Dutch King William I. At that time, the region was part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. The King established Ghent University alongside the University of Liège and the State University of Leuven.
Language has played a central role in the university's evolution. Originally, the language of instruction was Latin. Following the Belgian Revolution of 1830, the school transitioned to using French. However, a movement led by politician Lodewijk De Raet began to change this. In 1906, the university started offering courses in Dutch. By 1930, it officially became the first Dutch-speaking university in Belgium. This shift was a major milestone for the Flemish academic community.
The university also faced significant challenges during the World Wars. During World War I, the school closed because of the hostilities. The German administration attempted to exploit linguistic divisions through a policy called Flamenpolitik. They established a separate institution called Vlaamsche Hoogeschool in 1916. This was often called the "Von Bissing University" by critics. After the war ended, this institution was disestablished. The original University of Ghent then resumed its activities using French.
In the decades following the Second World War, the university grew rapidly. Government policies in the 1950s and 1960s aimed to democratize higher education in Flanders. This led to a massive increase in the student population. In 1953, there were more than 3,000 students enrolled. By 1969, that number had climbed to over 11,500 students.
Today, Ghent University is recognized as a top-tier global institution. It consistently ranks among the top 100 universities in the world. For example, in 2017, the Shanghai ranking placed it 69th globally. In 2021, U.S. News & World Report ranked it 85th worldwide.
