Later, Belgium became its own country in 1830. This caused some trouble for ship traffic until 1841. In 1881, people were asked to help build a new lock near Sas van Gent. A lock is a special structure that helps ships move through different water levels. Contractors like Nicolaas van Haaren worked hard to finish these tasks by 1884.

Many people and large sums of money helped the canal grow. In 1901, two Belgian contractors named Auguste Medaets and Hippolyte De Clercq won a big job. Their contract was worth 2,791,900 Dutch guilders. They worked on new locks and bridges in places like Terneuzen and Sluiskil. Even much later, in February 2015, Belgium and the Netherlands signed a new treaty. They planned a new lock at Terneuzen that would cost €920M. Building and maintaining a canal is a massive engineering task. To keep the canal useful, engineers must constantly manage its depth and width. Engineering challenges often required complex legal and financial solutions. In the Netherlands, contractors were required to provide personal guarantees for their work. This was different from Belgium, where a commercial guarantee was enough. When Nicolaas van Haaren died in August 1904, finding a new guarantor became difficult. Eventually, the chief engineer proposed that no further personal guarantees should be required. The work also had to take place within the restricted zones of the fortress of Neuzen. This required special authorization from the Minister of War.

Beyond shipping, the canal has hosted important social and sporting events. For many decades, from 1888 to 1954, the canal was the site of the Cluysen - Ter Donck Regatta. It also played a role in international sports history. During the 1913 Expo of Ghent, the European Rowing Championships took place on the water.

The canal continues to grow to meet the needs of modern shipping. As steamships replaced sailing ships, vessels became much larger. This led to a major agreement in 1895 to perform 21 different improvement works. In February 2015, Flanders and the Netherlands signed a treaty for a new lock at Terneuzen. This project was scheduled for completion in 2021 and cost €920M. This new lock is comparable in size to locks used in the Panama Canal expansion.
