Yonsei is a big school in Seoul.

It started a long time ago. It began as a hospital. A man named Horace Allen started it.

Later, a man named Underwood started a college. These two schools joined together. They took names from both schools. This made the name Yonsei.

Eventually, the school returned to its campus in the fall of 1953. Today, the university is a strong place for learning in Seoul.

This cooperation eventually led to a formal union in January 1957. Before this union, they operated as separate entities with different focuses. One was centered on medical science, while the other focused on broader liberal arts.

The medical roots of the university began with Gwanghyewon in April 1885.

This was the first modern medical center in Korea to practice Western medicine. It was founded by Horace Newton Allen, an American Protestant missionary. The hospital was later renamed Chejungwon. In 1893, the Canadian missionary Oliver R. Avison took over its management. Financial support shifted from the Korean government to the church after 1894. Later, a businessman named Louis Severance provided funds for new buildings. Because of his philanthropy, the facility was renamed Severance Hospital. By 1913, it had become the Severance Union Medical College.

The second major branch traces back to Chosun Christian College, founded in March 1915.

This institution was established by the missionary Horace Grant Underwood. He served as the first president of the college. The school originally operated at the YMCA location. It began with 81 students and 18 faculty members. This college eventually became known as Yonhi College. While it was intended to be a full university, legal restrictions changed its status. For a time, it was officially recognized only as a "professional school." Despite these limits, it maintained several departments, including humanities, agriculture, and commerce.

During the period of Japanese rule, the university faced significant challenges.

Following the annexation of Korea in 1910, new educational ordinances were introduced. These regulations were designed to control and stifle private education. Schools were required to report all changes in coursework and location to the governor-general. Furthermore, many courses were required to be taught in Japanese. The authorities also restricted the teaching of Korean history and geography. Yonhi College resisted some of these pressures by offering Korean language courses in 1938. However, the school faced intense pressure to adopt Shintoism and Japanese studies.

The Korean War brought further disruption to the university's operations. In 1950, the outbreak of conflict forced many institutions to change their functions. Severance served as a vital field hospital during the initial fighting. As the North Korean military advanced, the school had to flee Seoul. Many faculty members and students moved to Busan to maintain their presence. The university even joined a temporary wartime college during this period. The campus in Seoul suffered heavy damage due to its central location. It was not until the fall of 1953 that the university could fully return to its campus and begin restoration.

Today, Yonsei University remains a major center for global research and education. It offers various programs, including graduate and doctoral degrees, in both Korean and English. The university's history is a story of resilience through political and military shifts. It has grown from a single medical center into a massive academic complex.
