Horace Newton Allen started Gwanghyewon in April 1885. This was the first modern hospital to use Western medicine in Korea. Later, a man named Louis Severance helped pay for new buildings. Because of his help, the hospital was named Severance Hospital. The second part was a college.

Horace Grant Underwood started Chosun Christian College in March 1915. This school later became known as Yonhi College.

These two schools worked together for a long time. They began to cooperate in the 1920s. In January 1957, they officially became one university. They chose a special name for this new school. They took the first part of each old name. "Yon" came from Yonhi College. "Sei" came from Severance Union Medical College. This is how the name Yonsei was born.

There were very difficult times when Japan ruled Korea. The leaders in Japan made strict rules for all schools. They wanted students to learn in the Japanese language. They also tried to stop people from teaching Korean history. Yonhi College had to face many hard jobs during this time. The school even had to teach Japanese studies in 1940. Some teachers and students had to leave because of these rules. Even during these hard years, the school tried to keep learning alive.

The Korean War also brought many hard changes to the school. In 1950, the war started and caused much trouble. Severance worked as a field hospital to help people. Many students and teachers had to flee to Busan to stay safe. The campus in Seoul suffered heavy damage during the fighting. The school had to move and work in different places. Eventually, the school returned to its campus in the fall of 1953. Today, the university is a strong place for learning in Seoul.
