Horace Allen started the first modern hospital in Korea in 1885. It was called Gwanghyewon. Later, a man named Louis Severance gave money to help. The hospital was named after him.

The second group was a college. Horace Grant Underwood started it in 1915. It was called Chosun Christian College. Later, the school name changed to Yonhi College.

During hard times, Japan ruled Korea. They made strict rules for schools. They wanted students to learn in Japanese. Yonhi College still tried to teach the Korean language.

In 1957, the two groups joined together. They took the first part of each name. "Yon" came from Yonhi. "Sei" came from Severance. This made the name Yonsei.
