A woman named Mary F. Scranton started the school in 1886. It began as a small mission school for girls. At first, there was only one student. A year later, Emperor Gojong gave the school its name. Ewha means "Pear Blossom." The school uses this flower in its logo.

The school grew over many years. It began offering college classes in 1910. After Korea was liberated in 1945, it became a university. It was the first official university of its kind in South Korea.

Today, it is one of the largest schools for women in the world. Many women study there to become leaders. They become lawyers, bosses, and politicians. The school name uses "Woman" to show that every student is a special person. Ewha also has a museum. The museum holds many old treasures, like white porcelain jars.
