The school started a long time ago as a mission school. A woman named Mary F. Scranton founded it on May 31, 1886. In the beginning, the school was called Ewha Haktang. It was very small at first and had only one student.

The next year, Emperor Gojong gave the school its special name. Ewha means "Pear Blossom" in the local language. The school still uses the image of a pear blossom in its logo today.

Over many years, the school grew and changed its lessons. It began to offer college courses in the year 1910. Later, in 1925, it started professional courses for women. A big change happened on August 15, 1945, when Korea was liberated. Right after that, the school got permission to become a university. It was actually the very first university to be officially organized in South Korea.

The university has many interesting facts about its name and students. The name uses "Woman" instead of "Women" for a special reason. The school wants to show that every single woman is an individual. They want each student to grow in her own unique way. In April 2018, the school had 21,596 students enrolled. While most students are women, some men study there too. In 2003, there were 10 male students at the school. In 2009, men made up 30% of the international students.

Ewha is connected to many other famous places and people. The university works with 830 partners in 64 different countries. This includes famous schools like Harvard University and the University of Edinburgh.
