She lived during a time when Japan ruled over Korea. This period of colonial rule meant Koreans did not govern themselves. Yu became a powerful symbol for the movement to win freedom. People often call her "Korea's Joan of Arc" because of her bravery. Her life shows how one person can stand up for many people.

Yu's journey began with her studies and her faith. She was born on December 16, 1902, near Cheonan. Her family was Protestant, and she was a very smart child. She attended Ewha Haktang, which is now Ewha Womans University. At that time, very few women in Korea went to university. She even won a scholarship to attend this school.

In 1919, the March First Independence Movement began in Korea. Yu joined peaceful protests as a student in Seoul. Her teacher, Kim Ransa, encouraged her to join a group called the Ewha Literary Society. After the Japanese government closed the schools, Yu went back to her home in Cheonan. She worked with others like Cho In-won and Kim Goo-eung. They traveled to many towns to spread the word.

A large protest happened on April 1, 1919, at Aunae Marketplace. About 3,000 people gathered to shout for Korean independence. Sadly, the Japanese military police arrived and fired on the crowd. This event killed 19 people, including Yu's own parents.

Yu was arrested for her role in the demonstration. She was sent to Seodaemun Prison after a trial by a Japanese judge. Even in prison, she stayed strong and refused to cooperate with the authorities.

Yu died in prison on September 28, 1920. She died from injuries caused by torture and beatings.
