He was the principal owner of the New York Yankees baseball team. He held this role from 1973 until he died in 2010. Steinbrenner was the longest-serving owner in the history of the club. Under his leadership, the Yankees won seven World Series championships. They also won 11 American League pennants. He was a very well-known figure in the world of sports.

Steinbrenner was known for being a very hands-on leader. He often involved himself in daily decisions made on the baseball field. He sometimes hired and fired team managers quite often. One manager even gave him the nickname "Manager George" to tease him. He also had very strict rules about how the men should look. For example, players and coaches could not grow beards. They were only allowed to wear mustaches.

One player once shaved his beard but left a very long mustache to follow the rules.

Before he owned the Yankees, Steinbrenner worked in many different areas. He grew up in Ohio and learned about business as a young boy. At age nine, he raised chickens and sold them door to door.

He later worked for a large shipping company called Kinsman Marine Transit Company. This company moved grain and ore across the Great Lakes. He also invested money in professional basketball and Broadway theater plays. He even owned a basketball team called the Cleveland Pipers in 1960.

Steinbrenner's journey into baseball ownership began in the early 1970s. In 1973, he led a group of investors to buy the Yankees. They bought the team from a media company called CBS. The net cost for the group was about $8.8 million. This deal included the baseball team and two parking garages. He managed the team for nearly forty years. Even when he was suspended or facing hard times, he stayed focused on the team. He officially retired from daily control of the Yankees in 2008.

Steinbrenner's life connected many different worlds together. He moved from the world of shipping and business into professional sports. He also connected the world of business with the arts through Broadway. His family stayed involved with the Yankees after he passed away. His four children have served as general partners for Yankee Global Enterprises. He died in his Tampa home on July 13, 2010. This happened on the same morning as the 81st All-Star Game. His legacy remains a big part of baseball history.
