Dewey learned how to be a sailor through much hard work. He first went to Norwich University when he was fifteen years old. Later, he entered the United States Naval Academy in 1854. The school was quite small back then. Only fourteen students from his year finished the whole course. Dewey was a very good student and ranked fifth in his class. He graduated from the academy on June 18, 1858.

Dewey became a famous hero during the Spanish-American War in 1898. He was a commodore leading a fleet in the Asiatic Squadron. He led a big attack at Manila Bay. His fleet sank or captured the entire Spanish Pacific fleet.

This victory was amazing because only one American crewman died. Because of this great success, he was promoted to Admiral of the Navy in 1903.
