Dewey's journey to naval leadership began with some early challenges. At age 15, he attended Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont. He was expelled from that school after two years for herding sheep into the barracks and for drunkenness. However, he did not let this stop his career. In 1854, he entered the United States Naval Academy at age 16. The academy was quite small at that time, with only about one hundred midshipmen. Out of his entire class, only fourteen students finished the full course. Dewey was a dedicated student and graduated fifth in his class on June 18, 1858.

His early career involved learning the complexities of life at sea. After graduation, he served on the steam frigate Wabash. This ship was the new flagship for the Mediterranean Squadron. Dewey was assigned the important task of keeping the ship's log. He cruised through the Mediterranean and visited various cities in the Old World. This period helped him gain the experience needed for the difficult years ahead.

During the American Civil War, Dewey proved his tactical abilities in several major battles. In 1862, he served as an executive lieutenant on the steam paddle frigate Mississippi. He participated in the capture of New Orleans by maneuvering through shallow, dangerous waters. During this battle, he successfully evaded a Confederate ironclad named Manassas. He later led a ramming attack that forced the Manassas to run aground. In 1863, he was part of the Siege of Port Hudson. During that action, his ship ran aground under heavy enemy fire. Dewey was among the very last sailors to leave the wreck.

Dewey continued to show bravery and skill in subsequent assignments. In late 1864, he served as an executive officer on the USS Colorado. He played a key role during the Second Battle of Fort Fisher in January 1865. During this battle, he suggested a tactical move to silence a specific part of the enemy works. This move was completed in just fifteen minutes and was praised by the press. His commander, Commodore Henry Knox Thatcher, even noted that the success was due to Dewey's move. Following these successes, Dewey was promoted to the rank of lieutenant commander.

His most famous achievement occurred during the Spanish-American War in 1898. Dewey had been promoted to commodore in 1896 and was assigned to the Asiatic Squadron. When war broke out in April 1898, he immediately led an attack on Manila Bay. His fleet achieved a total victory by sinking or capturing the entire Spanish Pacific fleet. Remarkably, the American side suffered only a single death from its crew. This massive success led to his promotion to Admiral of the Navy in 1903.

In his later years, Dewey transitioned from active combat to naval policy and administration. He served on the United States Lighthouse Board, where he worked as a secretary. This role allowed him to become a well-known and popular figure in Washington, D.C. He also served on the General Board of the United States Navy. This was an important body that helped create naval policy. Although he briefly considered running for the presidency in 1900, he chose to support William McKinley instead. Dewey remained a vital part of the Navy's leadership until his death in 1917.
