He was born in a village called Gorodok. His family was part of the Russian nobility. He was the seventh child in a very large family. Out of eleven children, six died as infants. Many of his brothers became professional sailors too. In 1817, he started his training at a naval academy. He went on his first sea trip that same year. He traveled to the shores of Sweden and Denmark.

Nakhimov worked hard to rise through the ranks. In 1822, he joined a big trip around the world. This trip was led by the explorer Mikhail Petrovich Lazarev. During this three-year journey, Nakhimov became a lieutenant. He earned his first award, the Order of Saint Vladimir. Later, he served on a large warship called the Azov. In 1827, the Azov fought in the Battle of Navarino. This battle was part of a group effort with Britain and France. The Russian fleet helped destroy the Ottoman squadron there. Nakhimov was promoted to captain because of his great skill.

In 1853, a major war began called the Crimean War. Nakhimov led a group of ships in the Black Sea. He fought a famous battle at a place called Sinop. He had six battleships and several other vessels. The Russian guns were very strong against the Ottoman fleet. The battle lasted only a few hours. Most of the Ottoman ships were destroyed by fire. One ship, the Taif, managed to escape to Istanbul. This ship carried the news of the Russian victory. Nakhimov was praised for this win, but some people criticized his actions near the city.

After the win at Sinop, Nakhimov moved to Sevastopol. This city was a very important home for the Russian fleet. He worked with Admiral V. A. Kornilov to defend the city. They had to organize the land defense from the very start. While he was inspecting the defenses, a sniper shot him.

People have honored Nakhimov for a very long time. He became a hero in Russia and the Soviet Union. Many medals were named after him, like the Order of Nakhimov.
