He served under three different Russian rulers. These were Empress Catherine II, Emperor Paul I, and Emperor Alexander I. Kutuzov was known for being a very smart man. He was also a skilled diplomat who could talk to many people. His career lasted for many years and changed the history of his country. He is most remembered for his big victory against Napoleon.

Kutuzov learned how to be a great commander from a man named Alexander Suvorov. Suvorov was a famous leader who had his own special ideas. He believed that orders should be very simple and direct. He also taught that a leader must care about the health of his soldiers. Most importantly, Suvorov said a leader should stay at the front of the troops. This helped the soldiers see his bravery and follow him. Kutuzov used these lessons to become a very popular general.

Kutuzov used a special way to fight called attrition warfare. This meant he focused on wearing down the enemy over time. On September 7, 1812, a massive battle happened near Borodino. Nearly 250,000 soldiers fought in this huge clash. Even though the battle was very hard, Kutuzov's army was not destroyed.
