After college, Arthur became a lawyer in New York City. He worked very hard to help people get justice. One time, he helped a Black woman named Elizabeth Jennings Graham. She had been removed from a streetcar because of her race. Arthur won her case in court. This helped make streetcars in New York City more fair for everyone.

He also worked on a case regarding slavery in New York. Arthur became very involved in the Republican Party. He rose quickly in the political world of New York. He worked with many important leaders during this time.

Arthur's path to the presidency was very unexpected. In 1880, he was chosen as the vice president. He ran on a ticket with James A. Garfield.

They won the election and started their work in March 1881. However, President Garfield was shot by an assassin. Garfield died 11 weeks later. This meant Arthur had to become the president.

He took the oath of office to lead the nation. It was a very serious time for the country.

As president, Arthur made several major changes to the government. He signed the Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act in 1883.

Before this, people often got government jobs just because they knew powerful leaders. This was called the spoils system. The new law made the process much fairer. Arthur also helped grow the U.S. Navy. He oversaw the largest expansion of the Navy in history.

He also signed laws about immigration. This included the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. He signed a version of this law that lasted ten years.

Arthur's time as president was a period of big shifts. He helped move the country away from old political habits. Even though he had poor health, he worked steadily. He retired at the end of his term in 1885.

He never ran for president again as a nominee. People at the time praised his solid work in office. He left behind a changed government and a stronger Navy. His life showed how a lawyer could become a leader.
