Chakiris's journey began with a strong focus on movement and discipline. Born on September 16, 1932, in Norwood, Ohio, he was raised by Greek immigrants. His family eventually moved to Long Beach, California, in 1944. Although he attended Long Beach City College for one year, his passion was dance. He chose to drop out of college to pursue a professional career in Hollywood. To support himself, he worked in the advertising department of the May Company California department store. He spent his nights studying dance to refine his technical skills.

His early career involved many small, uncredited roles in musical films. He made his film debut at age 15 in the 1947 film Song of Love. For several years, he appeared primarily as a dancer or a chorus member. He performed in various productions, including The Great Caruso and White Christmas.

One notable moment occurred in the film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. There, he served as a dancer during the "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" musical number. His big break came through a close-up shot with singer Rosemary Clooney. This moment generated significant fan mail and led to a contract with Paramount Pictures.

Seeking greater professional growth, Chakiris moved to New York around 1958. He auditioned for the stage musical West Side Story, which was then running on Broadway. He was cast as Riff, the leader of the Jets, for the London production. He performed this role in the West End for nearly 22 months. When the Mirisch Brothers prepared the film adaptation, they made a casting change. They believed his dark complexion was better suited for the role of Bernardo. Consequently, he was cast as the leader of the Sharks instead of Riff. The film production lasted seven months and became a massive success.

Following his Academy Award win, Chakiris entered a period of high professional demand. He signed a long-term contract with the Mirisch Company. By 1962, his professional fee was reported to be $100,000 per movie. He expanded his talents into the music industry as a pop singer. He released two albums that reached the US charts. These were titled George-Chakiris, which peaked at No. 28, and Memories Are Made of This, which reached No. 45. He also starred in films such as Diamond Head and Kings of the Sun.

Chakiris later spent significant time working in Europe to experiment with his craft. He performed in various countries, including Italy, France, and Spain. He appeared in the French musical film The Young Girls of Rochefort in 1967. During the 1970s and 1980s, he transitioned into a prolific career in television. He appeared in numerous popular series such as Hawaii Five-O, Wonder Woman, and CHiPs.
