What does it mean to be a gentleman? The word can mean many different things depending on when and where you are.

In many stories, a gentleman is someone who is chivalrous, courteous, or honorable. Some people think it is a rank you are born into. Others believe it is a way of behaving toward others. Today, the word can even be used as a criticism or a compliment. For example, saying someone spends money like a gentleman might be a critique. However, saying they conduct business like a gentleman is a way to praise them.

In history, being a gentleman was often tied to owning land in England. This group was called the landed gentry. It was a specific social rank that sat below an esquire. It was also above a yeoman. This rank often included the younger sons of peers or knights. To show their status, many gentlemen used a coat of arms. A coat of arms is a special design used to prove a person's noble family.

Even the famous writer William Shakespeare was granted a coat of arms. This showed he was not a vagabond, but a gentleman.

Many thinkers have written about how a person becomes a gentleman. In the 14th century, the poet Geoffrey Chaucer said a gentleman must work hard to keep a good name. Later, in 1710, Richard Steele wrote that the title should be about behavior. He believed it should not just be about a person's circumstances. King James II of England famously shared this idea. He once said he could make a man a nobleman, but only God could make him a gentleman. This suggests that true gentility comes from the heart and character.

Different cultures have their own ways of defining a perfect person. In East Asia, the idea of the Jūnzǐ is very important. This term comes from the principles of Confucianism. A Jūnzǐ is often called a "noble man" or a "perfect man." These people try to act ethically and show loyalty to their families. They work hard to cultivate their own humanity. The opposite of a Jūnzǐ is a Xiǎorén, which means a "small person." A small person is seen as someone who is greedy or selfish.

In the Southern United States, the idea of a gentleman was also very strong. People in the Antebellum South looked to a chivalric ideal. They believed a gentleman should protect the honor of his family. Robert E. Lee once described how a gentleman uses power. He said a true gentleman uses power in a kind and gentle way. They do not use their strength to humble others unnecessarily. Instead, they strive for a mildness of character.

Whether through rank, behavior, or ethics, the idea remains a way to describe honor.
