It was released in Japan on March 21, 2001. Later that year, it arrived in international markets. This device was part of the sixth generation of video game consoles. It competed with the N-Gage from Nokia and the WonderSwan from Bandai. The system was very popular with people around the world. By June 2010, Nintendo had sold 81.51 million units of this series.

It was much stronger than the older Game Boy Color.

Inside the console, a special chip called a system on a chip, or SoC, does the work.

This chip combines the CPU and other parts into one package. It contains two different processors to handle different tasks. The first is an ARM7TDMI processor that runs at 16.776 megahertz. This processor handles the new GBA games. The second is a Sharp SM83 processor. This part helps with backward compatibility, which means it can play older games. It runs at either 4.194 MHz or 8.389 MHz depending on the game.

Nintendo worked on this project for a long time. A team led by Satoru Okada worked on an early version called Project Atlantis. This prototype used a 32-bit processor and a color screen. However, the team was not satisfied and stopped the project in 1997. Later, Nintendo decided to build a new device called the Advanced Game Boy. They used the technology from the old project to make the Game Boy Advance. The final design was created by a designer named Gwénaël Nicolas. His studio was called Curiosity Inc.

The console has a unique look and many different versions.

The original design is wide, which is called a landscape form factor. This is different from the tall portrait shape of older models. Nintendo released the Game Boy Advance SP in 2003 with a clamshell shape. They also made a tiny version called the Game Boy Micro in 2005.

There were many colors to choose from, like Arctic, Indigo, and Fuchsia. Some were even special editions for Pokémon or Hello Kitty. The screen is a small color display that is 2.9 inches wide. It can show up to 32,768 colors.

You can do many things with this handheld system. The buttons include a D-pad and six action buttons.

You can use a link cable to connect to other devices. You can even connect it to a GameCube home console. Some game cartridges have special tools inside them. For example, some can shake or tilt to change the game. Most games use 2D graphics, but some use 3D graphics. This allows games to look more like movies. The GBA was a huge success before the Nintendo DS took over.
