It uses a foldable clamshell design. This machine features two screens. The most special part is autostereoscopic 3D visuals. This means the images look three-dimensional. You do not even need special glasses to see them. This technology makes games feel much deeper. It was a major step forward for portable gaming.

This device works using clever light tricks. The 3D effect happens right on the screen. It does not require any extra tools or eyewear. The system also uses a motion sensor. This lets the console feel when you tilt it.

It also has a feature called StreetPass. This allows different systems to talk to each other. The console can also use augmented reality. This makes digital images appear in the real world.

Nintendo worked on 3D ideas for a long time. They first tried a 3D system in 1988. Later, they made the Virtual Boy in 1995.

That machine used goggles and tiny mirrors. It was not a big success at the time. Nintendo also studied 3D for the GameCube in 2001. They even researched 3D for a museum in Japan. All these small steps helped them build the 3DS.

The 3DS launched in Japan on February 26, 2011. It arrived in North America on March 27, 2011. At first, the price was $249.99. This was very high for a handheld device. Sales were slower than Nintendo expected. To help, they dropped the price to $169.99. They also gave away 20 free classic games. This helped the system become very popular.

Many different versions of the system exist.
