G-Cloud

space Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The G-Cloud is a huge cloud in space. It is also called the Galactic cloud. This cloud sits inside a region called the Local Bubble. It is located right next to the Local Interstellar Cloud.

Scientists are not sure where our Solar System sits. We might be inside the Local Interstellar Cloud. We might also be in the spot where both clouds meet. One thing is certain about our movement. Our Solar System is moving toward the G-Cloud.

Many bright stars live inside this cloud. It holds the star Altair. The G-Cloud also contains the Alpha Centauri system. This is a triple star system. One of those stars is named Proxima Centauri. There may be even more stars there.

Researchers study how thick the cloud is. They measure the particle density in the cloud. This is the number of tiny particles in a space. In 2011, a person named Crawford made an estimate. He found a density of 0.1 cm−3.

Another study looked at the same area. A person named Gry did this work in 2014. Gry found a density of 0.098 cm−3. These numbers look toward the direction of Alpha Centauri. They help us learn about the space around us.
