Most mammals have a soft, thick growth of hair called pelage.

This coat covers almost all mammals and serves many important jobs. The most important job is thermoregulation, which is how an animal keeps its body at the right temperature. Fur can also act as a shield for protection. It can help an animal hide through camouflage. It can even help animals feel things through sensory hairs like whiskers.

Many coats work using three different layers of hair. The bottom layer is called down hair, or underfur. These hairs are short, wavy, and very numerous. They trap a layer of dry air next to the skin to keep the animal warm. The middle layer is called awn hair. These hairs are a hybrid of the other two types. They start out like guard hairs but grow thin and wavy like down hair. The top layer is made of guard hair. These long, straight hairs are the most visible part of the coat. They repel water and block sunlight to protect the skin.

Colors on a coat are not just for looks. Many animals use color for camouflage to hide from predators or prey.

Some animals use aposematism, which is a way to warn others to stay away. A skunk uses black and white colors to show it can defend itself. Other animals change color when the seasons change. An arctic fox turns from brown in summer to white in winter. This helps it hide in the snow. Some animals, like the polar bear, have white fur that reflects sunlight. This helps them manage heat in the cold.

Some animals have much less hair than others. We often call these animals "naked" or "hairless." For example, the naked mole-rat lives underground and has very little fur. Large animals like elephants and rhinoceroses are also mostly hairless. Some animals, like whales or hippos, evolved to be hairless to move through water more easily. Humans are the only primates that have lost a lot of hair. This may be due to a change in a gene called KRTHAP1. This change happened a long time ago, even for the Altai Neandertal and Denisovan peoples.

Humans have used fur for a very long time. Even Neanderthals used fur for clothing. People used it because it keeps them warm. Today, people use fur for decoration or clothing. Some fur is even used to make felt. For example, beaver fur is used to make high-end hats. There are many animals used in the fur industry, such as fox, rabbit, and mink. Some people find the use of fur for clothing to be controversial. They worry about how animals are treated on farms or in the wild.
