This coat helps animals live in many places. The main job of fur is thermoregulation. This is the way animals stay at the right temperature.

Many coats have three different layers. The bottom layer is called down hair. It is short, curly, and very soft. This layer traps air to keep the animal warm. The middle layer is called awn hair. It is a mix of the other two types. The top layer is called guard hair. These hairs are long and straight. They keep water off the skin. They also protect the animal from the sun.

Color is also very important. Some animals use camouflage to hide from others. For example, a leopard has a spotted coat. This helps it hide while it hunts.

Other animals use bright colors to warn others. A skunk uses black and white colors to say "stay away." Some animals even change color with the seasons. An arctic fox turns white in the winter to match the snow.
