A parka is a special kind of warm coat with a hood.

These garments are very important for staying warm in freezing weather. People often use them to protect themselves from wind and snow. Some parkas are long, reaching down to the thighs or even the knees. Other types, called anoraks, are usually shorter and only reach the hips. An anorak is often a pull-over jacket without a front opening. People value these coats because they provide safety in harsh climates.

Making a parka involves using many different materials to keep heat in. Traditional Inuit parkas were made from animal skins like caribou or seal. Some Inuit anoraks even need a coating of fish oil to stay waterproof. Modern parkas often use soft stuffing called down or warm synthetic fibers. The military developed the snorkel parka with a special high zipper. This allows the wearer to look through a small tunnel called a snorkel.

This design works well in very cold and windy places.

Many different kinds of parkas have interesting histories. The word anorak comes from the Greenlandic word annoraaq. It appeared in English books around 1924. The word parka comes from the Nenets language. In the Aleutian Islands, the word simply means animal skin. The United States military used the fishtail parka during the Korean War. They created several versions, including the M-48 and the M-51.

These coats were designed to be worn over other layers of clothing.

There are many specific facts about these famous coats. The M-51 fishtail parka was made to be easier and cheaper to produce. It used a three-part system so the hood and liners could be removed. The M-65 fishtail parka began production in 1968. This version used synthetic fur on the hoods instead of real fur. In the 1960s, a lightweight coat called a cagoule became popular in the United Kingdom. It was invented by Noel Bibby in the early 1960s.

A cagoule can often be rolled into a very small package.

Parkas have also become part of popular culture and fashion. In the 1960s, a group in the UK called the mods loved fishtail parkas. They wore them while riding scooters to keep their nice clothes clean. This helped protect them from grease and dirt on the road. In the 1950s, the anorak became a fashion item in Vogue magazine. Today, you can find many colors of parkas, like bright orange or navy blue. They remain a useful tool for anyone facing the cold.
