Francesco had a very special way of working with music. He was blind from the time he was a child. This happened because he had a sickness called smallpox. Even so, he mastered many instruments like the lute. He also built large organs for famous churches. He even invented a new stringed instrument. It was called the syrena syrenarum. This tool combined parts of a lute and a psaltery.

We know much about his life from old books. A writer named Filippo Villani wrote about him in 1385. Villani said Francesco was a very famous citizen of Florence. We also see his music in a big book called the Squarcialupi Codex. This book helps us see how much music he wrote. He wrote many ballate, which are types of songs. He wrote eighty-nine ballate for two voices. He also wrote forty-two ballate for three voices.

Francesco worked in many important places in his city. He was an organist at the Santa Trinità monastery in 1361. Later, he worked at the church of San Lorenzo. He helped build organs at the Servite house and the SS Annunziata. In 1387, he even worked on an organ for the Florence Cathedral. He spent time in northern Italy too. One of his songs was even for the leader of Venice. This leader was named Andrea Contarini.

Today, we still remember Francesco through his music and his name. He is known for something called the Landini cadence. This is a special way of moving through musical notes. While he did not invent it, he used it all the time. His music represents almost one quarter of all Italian music from that era. His tombstone is in the church of San Lorenzo. It shows him playing a small organ called a portative organ.
