Francesco Landini was a central figure in the music of the Trecento. This was a period of great musical development in the Italian peninsula during the 14th century. Landini was a prolific composer, poet, singer, and organist. He was also a skilled instrument maker. His work represents almost a quarter of all surviving Italian music from that era.

Landini's life was defined by his incredible talent despite significant challenges. He was blind from childhood due to contracting smallpox. This did not stop him from mastering many instruments, including the lute. He was also an inventor of musical tools. One of his inventions was the syrena syrenarum. This was a stringed instrument that combined features of the lute and the psaltery. Many believe this instrument was an ancestor of the bandura.

Scholars have studied many different names for him in old manuscripts. He was called Francesco degli Organi, which means Francesco of the organs. He was also known as Francesco il Cieco, meaning Francesco the blind. While many people call him Francesco Landini, modern scholars debate this surname. They believe the link to the Landini family was a mistake made by later writers. The name likely came from Cristoforo Landino, who claimed Francesco as an ancestor.

Landini's career was deeply connected to the city of Florence. He held important positions as an organist in several religious locations. In 1361, he worked at the Santa Trinità monastery. From 1365 onward, he was employed at the church of San Lorenzo. He was also a consultant for building large organs. Around 1375, he helped Andreas da Florentia build an organ at the Servite house. This project took three days of tuning.

His musical output was mostly secular, which means it was not for religious services. Although records show he composed sacred music, none of those pieces have survived. Most of what we know comes from the Squarcialupi Codex. This collection includes eighty-nine ballate for two voices. It also contains forty-two ballate for three voices. He wrote nine more works that exist in both two and three-voice versions. He also composed a smaller number of madrigals.

Landini's fame reached far beyond the city of Florence. He likely spent time in northern Italy before 1370. One of his motets was dedicated to Andrea Contarini, the Doge of Venice from 1368 to 1382. His music was so moving that contemporary writers were amazed. Giovanni da Prato wrote in 1389 that Landini's melodies were so sweet they could make hearts burst. This shows how much people valued his skill and emotion.

One of his most lasting legacies is the Landini cadence. This is a specific musical formula used in polyphonic music. In this cadence, a sixth degree of the scale is inserted between the leading note and its resolution. While Landini did not invent this formula, he used it consistently. Because of his frequent use, it is named after him. This technique can still be found in the music of other composers from the 15th century.

Today, we can still see traces of his life in Florence. He is buried in the church of San Lorenzo. His tombstone was lost for a long time but was found in the 19th century. The stone features a depiction of him playing a portative organ. This image helps us visualize the man who shaped the sounds of his age. His life remains a vital part of studying the Italian Trecento style.
