Scientists use labs to test food. They look for pathogens. Pathogens are tiny living things like bacteria or viruses. These can cause a food-borne disease outbreak. An outbreak is when many people get sick from one food.

Food can get dirty in many ways. This is called contamination. Physical contamination happens when objects like hair or metal get in food. Chemical contamination happens with things like pesticides. Biological contamination comes from living creatures.

Bacteria are the most common cause of food poisoning. They like warm spots. This is called the danger zone. It is between 5°C and 60°C.

We can follow rules to stay safe. Always wash your hands well. Keep raw foods away from cooked foods. Cook food at the right temperature. Keep cold food in a fridge. The fridge should be 4.4°C or below.

Inspectors also study food to keep us well.
