Floor plan

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A floor plan is a special technical drawing. It shows how rooms and features connect on one level.

Architects use these to show the horizontal relationships in a building. This means they show how spaces sit next to each other. A plan is like a map of a building. It uses a view called orthographic projection. This shows relationships without any distortion.

Architects often draw them at a height of four feet. This height lets them see objects below that level. They show objects at that level as if they were cut.

There are many ways these plans work. A plan shows a 3D object in 2D. It acts like a section viewed from the top. The drawing leaves out the roof and upper walls. This reveals what lies inside the structure.

Some plans use crosshatching to show materials. The style of the lines tells you what the section passes through. Other plans show a reflected ceiling. This is a reflected ceiling plan, or RCP. It looks like you are looking through a mirror. This shows lights and ceiling shapes for builders.

People have used plans for a very long time. The art of making ground plans is called ichnography. This word comes from Greek roots meaning "track" or "trace."

A man named Vitruvius described this art long ago. He lived in the first century BC. He said plans should show the outer walls. They should also show windows and fireplaces. A plan from the 22nd century BC shows a temple layout. This was carved on a statue of Gudea.

Details in a plan depend on its use. A schematic design plan is very simple. It might only show big spaces and square footage. A construction plan is much more detailed. It shows the types of walls being built.

These plans include specific sizes for rooms. They show where sinks and water heaters go. They even include symbols for electrical items. Some plans are simple diagrams for safety. These show fire exits or how people move.

They are used to present ideas rather than for building.

Modern technology has changed how we see plans. Many people now use 3D floor plans. These are made using digital models.

They use perspective instead of orthographic projection. This shows a better sense of depth. It also uses 3D furniture to show scale. This helps people who do not know technical drawings.

It is much cheaper to make these digital models now. Architects also use large plotters to print them. They can even use large xerographic copiers. These tools help bring the 2D drawing to life.
