Flash evaporation is a way to turn liquid into gas.

It happens when liquid moves through a small valve. This valve lowers the pressure. When the pressure drops, part of the liquid turns into vapor. This is called a flash. A tank that holds this vapor and liquid is called a flash drum.

This can happen with one kind of liquid. For example, propane can flash into gas. This also makes the remaining liquid cold. This cooling is called auto-refrigeration. It helps make many cooling systems work.

Some liquids have many parts mixed together. This is a multi-component liquid. When these flash, the gas has more of the parts that turn to gas easily. This is used in oil plants and gas plants.

People also use this to make fresh water. They use a way called Multi-Stage Flash Distillation. They heat ocean water and let it flash into steam. This steam becomes clean water without salt. They do this in many steps. Some plants use 24 or more steps. This makes a lot of fresh water.
