Fences is a famous play written by the American writer August Wilson. It tells a deep story about a family living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The play takes place during the 1950s. It is the sixth part of a larger collection of ten plays called the Pittsburgh Cycle. These plays look at the lives of African-American people during different times.

The story is very important to many people. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1987. It also won the Tony Award for Best Play that same year.

The story focuses on a man named Troy Maxson. Troy is a 53-year-old man who works a hard job collecting trash. In his younger days, he was a very good baseball player in the Negro leagues. However, he could not play in Major League Baseball because of race rules at the time. This history makes him feel very strongly about how the world works.

Troy lives with his wife, Rose, and their teenage son, Cory. He also has a brother named Gabriel. Gabriel was a soldier in World War II. He carries a trumpet and sometimes believes he can see angels.

Many things happen in the Maxson home. Troy works very hard to provide for his family. He even uses money to buy a house for them. But Troy can be very stubborn and hard-headed. He has big arguments with his son, Cory, about football and dreams. One big part of the story is about a fence being built. Rose wants the fence to keep her family safe and close. Troy sees the fence in a different way.

The fence represents many different feelings and ideas.

Many talented actors have brought these characters to life on stage. In the first Broadway show in 1987, James Earl Jones played Troy. Mary Alice played his wife, Rose. This production was a huge success. It won many awards, including Tony Awards for acting and directing.

Later, in 2010, a new version appeared on Broadway. This time, Denzel Washington played Troy and Viola Davis played Rose. They also won many awards for their wonderful work. The play has been performed in many places, including the United Kingdom.

People love this play because it feels very real. It shows how families deal with love, pride, and hard times. The title, Fences, has many meanings. It can mean a real fence in a yard. It can also mean the barriers people build between each other. It even connects to baseball, where players try to hit the ball "over the fences."

Even when the story is sad, it helps people think about forgiveness. It shows how people try to find peace with their past.
