Fences is a famous play written by August Wilson. It tells a story about a family in Pittsburgh. The play is set in the 1950s. It is part of a larger group of plays. This group is called the Pittsburgh Cycle.

The main character is a man named Troy Maxson. Troy works a hard job. He collects trash to help his family. In his youth, he was a great baseball player. However, he could not play in the major leagues. This was because of race rules at that time.

Troy lives with his wife, Rose, and their son, Cory. His brother, Gabriel, also lives nearby. Gabriel was a soldier in World War II. The play shows how the family deals with hard times. They face many struggles with race and work. They also face struggles within the home.

Fences is a very important work of art. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1987. It also won a Tony Award for Best Play. Many famous actors have played Troy and Rose on stage. People still love to watch this story today.
