At age 29, she won the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award. This made her the youngest playwright to ever win that prize. She was also the first Black American dramatist to receive it.

Lorraine grew up in a house full of important ideas. Her parents were very active in their community in Chicago. Her father, Carl, was a successful real-estate broker. Her mother, Nannie, was a teacher and a ward committeewoman. In 1938, her father bought a house in the Washington Park area. Some white neighbors tried to force the family to move out. This led to a famous Supreme Court case called Hansberry v. Lee. The family fought hard for their right to live in their home.

As she grew up, Lorraine worked with many famous people. Her home was often visited by leaders like W. E. B. Du Bois and Paul Robeson. She also met musicians like Duke Ellington and athletes like Jesse Owens. After moving to New York City, she joined a newspaper called Freedom. She worked there as a typist, a receptionist, and an editor. She also wrote news stories and scripts for the paper. She even wrote a script to celebrate the newspaper's first birthday.

Lorraine used her writing to talk about many different struggles. She wrote about people fighting for freedom in African countries like Kenya. She also wrote about the rights of gay and lesbian people. For a long time, she kept her identity as a lesbian private. Later in her life, she spoke more openly about it. She wanted to create her own life and not just accept what was given. Even her writing helped others understand these important topics.

Her life and work still touch people today. The singer Nina Simone even wrote a song called "To Be Young, Gifted and Black" about her. The song title comes from one of Lorraine's own plays. Lorraine passed away from pancreatic cancer in 1965 at the age of 34. She died just two days after her play The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window finished its Broadway run. Her courage and her words continue to inspire writers all over the world.
