She lived during a famous time called the Harlem Renaissance. This was a movement in the 1920s and 1930s. It celebrated Black art, music, and books. West was one of the few Black women writers published in big magazines then. She used her stories to talk about race and class. Her work helped people understand the Black experience in America. She wanted to show the truth about how people lived.

West began her writing journey at a very young age. She reportedly wrote her first story when she was only seven. At age 14, she published a short story called "Promise and Fulfillment." She grew up in a successful family in Boston. Her father, Isaac Christopher West, was a businessman. He was known as the "Black Banana King" because he owned a fruit company. Her mother taught her to face the world with pride and humor. This helped her prepare for a world that was often unkind.

Her career had many different parts. She was a student at Boston University and Columbia University. In 1926, she tied for second place in a writing contest. She tied with the famous writer Zora Neale Hurston. West also tried acting for a few years. She even traveled to London with a play in 1929. Later, she traveled to the Soviet Union. She stayed there for a year before returning home to her family.

In the 1930s, West moved to Harlem. She became part of a group of artists and thinkers. She met famous writers like Langston Hughes and Countee Cullen. Hughes even gave her the nickname "The Kid." West was very busy helping other artists. In 1934, she used $40 to start a magazine called Challenge. She also helped with a magazine called New Challenge. This gave young Black artists a place to share their work.

West is most famous for her novels. Her first book, The Living Is Easy, came out in 1948. It was about a Black family in Boston. Many years later, she wrote her second novel, The Wedding. This book came out in 1995 when she was 85 years old. It was about a family on Martha's Vineyard. A famous producer named Oprah Winfrey even made it into a TV show. West lived a long life and died in 1998. She was proud that she never said "I can't."
