People often call him the "theater's poet of Black America." He is most famous for a series of ten plays. This collection is called the Pittsburgh Cycle or the Century Cycle. These plays tell the history of Black people in America during the 1900s. They cover every decade from 1904 to 1997. His work helps people understand the joy and the hard times of that era.

Wilson had a very interesting way of finding his stories. He spent a lot of time in cafes and bars. He would write his ideas on paper napkins or small yellow notepads. Writing on napkins helped him feel less shy about his work. He also used his amazing memory to catch how people spoke. He loved to use real accents and local ways of talking. This made his characters feel like real people to the audience. He even used a stolen typewriter for ten dollars to help him work.

He was born Frederick August Kittel Jr. in 1945. His mother, Daisy Wilson, was an African-American woman from North Carolina. His father was a German immigrant who worked as a baker. Life was often difficult for his family as they grew up. Wilson eventually changed his name to August Wilson to honor his mother. He spent many years teaching himself by reading books at the local library.

Wilson won many huge awards for his talent during his career. Two of his plays, *Fences* and *The Piano Lesson*, won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. He also won a Tony Award for the play *Fences*. In 2006, he was put into the American Theater Hall of Fame. Many of his plays have even been turned into movies recently. The 2016 movie *Fences* was directed by Denzel Washington. This movie helped bring Wilson's words to even more people around the world.

His work connects deeply to music and other kinds of art. He was very inspired by blues music and singers like Bessie Smith. He also liked the art of collage, which is making art from many pieces. He looked to writers like Langston Hughes and James Baldwin for ideas. His plays show how people move to new places and find their way. They explore how people find their identity and their place in the world. Even today, his stories help us talk about important things together.
