His plays were known for being realistic and very well-made. People admired how he wrote about real life and human feelings. He was a major part of the theater movement in New York City. His work moved from small, experimental stages to the big lights of Broadway. He helped change how people experienced live theater through his many different plays.

Wilson's journey into theater began with a love for art and stories. As a child in Missouri, he enjoyed writing short stories and watching plays. One performance of the play Brigadoon had a huge effect on him. He even acted in high school plays, such as playing Tom in The Glass Menagerie. After moving to San Diego and Chicago, he realized he wanted to write plays instead of short stories. He began studying playwriting to turn his ideas into scripts for actors.

In the 1960s, Wilson became a key figure in the off-off-Broadway movement. He found a mentor at a small place called the Caffe Cino. His first big success there was a play called The Madness of Lady Bright in 1964. This play was very original and set a record at that theater. It ran for over 200 performances, which was a huge deal at the time. He also wrote many plays for the La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club.

Wilson helped build a lasting home for theater by co-founding the Circle Repertory Company in 1969. He worked with director Marshall W. Mason to create many important works. One of their first big successes was the play The Höl Baltimore in 1973. This play was a commercial hit and ran for 1,166 performances. He also wrote the play Fifth of July, which moved to Broadway in 1980. Another famous play, Talley's Folly, was a prequel to that story.

Throughout his long career, Wilson earned many of the highest honors in theater. In 1980, he won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his work. He was also elected to the American Theater Hall of Fame in 2001. Wilson received five Obie Awards and was nominated for three Tony Awards. He was even named a Master American Dramatist by the PEN/Laura Pels Foundation. His life and his many plays left a lasting mark on the world of art.
