Writing for the stage involves many different steps and styles. McNally wrote everything from serious dramas to funny farces. A farce is a type of comedy that uses silly situations. He also wrote musical scripts by working with composers and lyricists. For example, he worked with John Kander and Fred Ebb on the musical *Kiss of the Spider Woman*. He also collaborated with Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens for the musical *Ragtime*. His work moved from small, experimental theaters to the huge stages of Broadway.

McNally's journey began in St. Petersburg, Florida, where he was born in 1938.

His parents ran a seaside bar called The Pelican Club. After a hurricane hit, his family moved to several different places, including Texas. As a young boy, he saw famous shows like *The King and I*. These experiences made him want to live in New York City. He later studied English at Columbia College and graduated in 1960. During this time, he even wrote the annual Varsity Show for his school.

His career was full of great honors and many famous names.

In 1996, he was put into the American Theater Hall of Fame. In 2018, he joined the American Academy of Arts and Letters. This is a very high honor for artists in the United States.

McNally's stories helped people think about the world around them. He wrote about social protests and the difficulties of life. Some of his plays, like *Corpus Christi*, caused a lot of debate and protest. He also wrote about the impact of the AIDS epidemic on families and friends. Even when his work was controversial, he stayed focused on how people relate to one another. He passed away in March 2020 at a hospital in Florida. His many works continue to be a part of theater history.
