Faramarz Payvar was a famous composer and musician from Iran. He was a master of the santur, which is a wooden instrument with strings.

Before his work, the santur was not always a main solo instrument. Payvar changed this by revolutionizing how people play it. He used felt on the hammers that strike the strings. This made the sound softer and less metallic. It sounded more like a piano. Some people thought this was strange, but it helped the santur become very important in Persian classical music.

Payvar was known for being a very disciplined person. He expected his students and his musicians to work very hard. Because he was so strict, the members of his groups stayed the same for a long time. He started his own school for playing the santur. He taught students to play in new ways using arpeggiated figures. These are notes played in a sequence rather than all at once. This style showed an openness to Western musical ideas. He also wrote many helpful books to teach others.

Payvar was born in Tehran in 1933. Music was in his family because his father and grandfather were musicians too. They played the santur and the violin. At age 17, he began studying with a master named Abolhasan Saba. It took him six years to master the radif. The radif is the complete collection of Persian classical music. After he learned it, he performed on the Iranian National Radio. These old recordings are now being saved by the Golha Project.

Throughout his life, Payvar led two major musical groups. In 1959, he founded the National Instrumental Orchestra. Later, in 1966, he started a group called the Goruhe Asātid, which means Ensemble of Maestros. He traveled to many places to share his music. He performed in North America, Great Britain, Japan, and Europe. In the 1960s and 1970s, he recorded many albums for French labels. One famous album was recorded in America in 1973. It featured a singer named Khatareh Parvaneh.

Payvar faced many changes in his country. During the years of the Iranian Revolution and the Iran-Iraq war, music was mostly banned. However, Payvar did not stop teaching people privately. In 1989, when the ban was lifted, he gave the first public concert at Rudaki Hall. In 1998, he suffered a stroke while visiting his daughter in Paris. This made one side of his body weak and he could not perform anymore. He still mentored young musicians from his home until he died in 2009.
