People love its unique and ringing sound. This sound comes from how the strings vibrate. The instrument has many strings that work together. Some are played directly to make melodies. Others are called sympathetic strings, or taraf. These sit underneath the frets. They vibrate on their own to help the music ring out.

This makes the music feel very rich.

Playing the sitar is a careful skill. A musician sits with the instrument balanced. They use their left foot and right knee. This helps their hands move freely. The player uses a metal pick called a mizraab. They pluck the strings to make notes. A special move is called meend. The player pulls a string down over a curved fret. This lets them slide between different notes. It can even sound like a human voice.

History tells us how the sitar changed. Scholars believe it came from the setar. The setar is a small instrument from Iran. An 18th-century man named Khusrau Khan may have created it. The earliest written mention of the sitar is from 1739 AD. Over time, the instrument grew into its modern shape. The neck became much wider. The bowl was made from a large gourd.

Makers also added metal frets and bone parts.

Many famous people helped the sitar travel the world. Ravi Shankar was a very important player. He helped bring Indian music to the West. In the 1960s, he taught George Harrison from the Beatles. This helped the sitar become popular in pop songs. Bands like the Rolling Stones used it too. Ravi Shankar called this the "great sitar explosion."

It became a very trendy sound for young people.

Today, there are different ways to make a sitar. One style is the highly decorated instrumental style. This is often called the Ravi Shankar style. These sitars often have beautiful carvings of flowers or grapes. They might even have a second small resonator on the neck. Another style is called the gayaki style. This style is named after the singer Vilayat Khan. Musicians choose their sitar based on their own musical needs. Some are for beginners and some are for masters.
