People use ethos to describe values. These values guide a nation or a culture. Ethos can change over time. New ideas can shift what a group values. For example, new ways of making money changed ideas in Palestine in the 1930s.

In the past, Greeks used the word for habits. It also described how music can change feelings.

Famous thinkers like Aristotle studied ethos. He said it helps a speaker persuade people. To do this, a speaker must build trust. Aristotle said a speaker needs three things. They need practical wisdom. They need to be a good person. They also need to show kindness to the crowd.

Some people think ethos comes from the speaker. Others say it comes from what the crowd thinks. If a speaker has a secret goal, people may doubt them. This can hurt their ethos. In modern times, news can also shape a person's ethos. This is called intertextual ethos.
