These areas have a strong cultural identity that people share. They are also places where people run their own businesses. This concentration of people helps them stay connected to their roots. It can also help them build a new life in a new country.

These places work by using something called social capital. This is a way for people to help each other through social connections. Immigrants often form migrant networks to share important information. They might talk about where to find good jobs or affordable homes. They can also share news about government programs or helpful groups.

By sharing this knowledge, they make moving to a new place less expensive. This help can also support their emotional needs during big changes.

The idea of the ethnic enclave became famous through study. In 1980, researchers Alejandro Portes and Kenneth Wilson looked at Cuban immigrants in Miami. They saw that many immigrants worked for businesses owned by people from their own group. They called this the enclave economy. This discovery helped explain how some groups find success very quickly.

It showed that people do not always have to join the main labor market right away. They can build their own path instead.

Many famous enclaves exist all over the world today. New York City has a very large Chinatown in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. More than half a million people of Chinese ancestry live in New York City.

These places show how different groups create their own unique spaces in a large area.

While enclaves offer many benefits, they can also present hard jobs. Some experts worry about a "glass ceiling" that might limit how much people grow. If people stay only in the enclave, they might not learn skills used in the wider country. This can sometimes make it harder to reach new opportunities in the mainstream economy. A 2024 study even found that moving away from an enclave helped some families achieve more. It is a complex way that people connect to new societies.
