You can find these places in many lands. They are in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Some Chinatowns are in big cities near oceans. Others are in suburbs or even in shopping malls. Some are even called "pan-Asian" districts. This means they have people from many different Asian countries. For example, Asiatown in Cleveland, Ohio, helps many groups live together.

These neighborhoods often start because of trade or work. Many people moved from China to find new jobs. In the 1860s, a treaty opened China's borders for more movement. Many early travelers came from provinces like Guangdong and Fujian. They spoke languages like Cantonese or Hokkien. Some moved to find gold in the 1850s. This helped Chinatowns grow in San Francisco and Melbourne.

Other people worked on the big Transcontinental Railroad. These workers helped build paths across the United States. As more people arrived, they built shops and homes together. This created a strong community in new lands.

Chinatowns have a very long history. The roots of these areas go back to the 10th century. Binondo in Manila is a very famous example. It was started in 1594.

This makes it the oldest standing Chinatown in the world. In the Philippines, these areas were once called "pariáns." They were marketplaces for trading goods. In Japan, places like Yokohama existed as early as 1600. In Thailand, the Chinatown in Bangkok started in 1782. These old places show how people have moved for centuries.

Many Chinatowns grew because of big changes in the world. In Australia, the gold rush in 1851 brought many people to Melbourne.

Melbourne's Chinatown is the oldest continuous settlement in the West. In the United States, San Francisco has a very large Chinatown. It was a main place for immigrants to enter the country. However, history was not always easy for these people. Some Chinatowns in the West disappeared due to unfair laws. In London, the first Chinatown started in the Limehouse area. It helped Chinese sailors who worked near the docks.

Today, Chinatowns are changing once again. Some used to be places to help people learn a new culture. Now, many are busy places for food and travel. In Montville, Connecticut, a new community grew after 2001. This happened after many workers moved from Manhattan. In Mexico, the Chinatown in Tijuana grew very fast. It grew because of new direct flights to Shanghai. In 2009, there were 5,000 Chinese people there. By 2012, that number rose to about 15,000 people.
