He is most famous for creating Blackwater, a private security contractor. His career has spanned military service, private security, and international investment. Prince has worked in many different countries, including the United States, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, and China. His work often involves providing specialized training or security for governments and large corporations. This role places him at the center of discussions regarding private companies and global security.

Prince was born on June 6, 1969, in Holland, Michigan. He was the youngest of four children born to Edgar and Elsa Prince. As a child, he traveled to significant historical sites with his father. These trips included visiting the Dachau concentration camp and the battlefields of Normandy. Such experiences left a lasting impression on him. After attending the United States Naval Academy for three semesters, he graduated from Hillsdale College in 1992 with a B.A. in economics. He also worked as a volunteer firefighter and an emergency medical technician.

Following college, Prince became a Naval Special Warfare Officer. He completed the intense Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training, known as BUD/S, in 1993. He served as part of SEAL Team 8, deploying to Haiti, the Middle East, and the Balkans. During the Yugoslav Wars in the early 1990s, Prince observed a specific need in the military sector. He realized that special operations forces required private training facilities. He eventually left the Navy in 1995 after the death of his father. Before starting his own firm, he helped sell his father's auto parts company for $1.35 billion.

In 1997, Prince personally financed the creation of Blackwater Worldwide. He established a special operations training school in the Great Dismal Swamp of North Carolina. The company name, Blackwater, was inspired by the peat-colored bogs in that area. Prince stated that the 1994 Rwandan genocide motivated his decision to found the company. Between 1997 and 2010, Blackwater secured $2 billion in government security contracts. This included over $1.6 billion in unclassified federal contracts. The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) also awarded the firm up to $600 million in classified contracts.

Blackwater became a major provider of security for the State Department. At one point, it employed 987 guards to protect embassies and bases abroad. However, the company faced intense scrutiny following the Nisour Square massacre in September 2007. In that incident, Blackwater employees opened fire in a crowded Baghdad square. This event resulted in the deaths of 17 Iraqi civilians and wounded 20 others. In 2014, three guards were convicted of manslaughter charges related to the event. Prince defended his company, noting that out of 40,000 missions, only 200 involved guards firing weapons.

After leaving Blackwater in 2010, Prince expanded his operations globally. He moved to Abu Dhabi to help the United Arab Emirates assemble 800 foreign troops. He also worked on a program to train 2,000 Somalis for anti-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden. In 2011, he was invited to Moscow to train with the Alpha Group, a Russian special forces unit. Prince also focused on private equity through the Frontier Resource Group. He invested in mineral and oil projects in countries like Guinea and South Sudan. In South Sudan, he sold aircraft and services to the government for $43 million.

Prince also established a significant presence in Asia through the Frontier Services Group (FSG). This company is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and has support from the Chinese state-owned CITIC Group. Through FSG, Prince advised mining and construction firms operating in Africa. In 2017, his group acquired a 25% stake in the International Security Defense College in Beijing. This school provides training in counterterrorism and high-risk operations. Prince's career illustrates the growing role of private entities in international military and economic systems.
