Terry Gou is a prominent Taiwanese billionaire businessman and politician. He is most famous as the founder and former leader of Foxconn. Gou's rise began with a very small amount of money. In 1974, he founded Hon Hai Precision Industry, which later became Foxconn. He started the business in a rented shed in Tucheng, Taiwan. He used only $7,500 in startup money to begin his work. At that time, he only had ten elderly employees. They worked together to make plastic parts for television sets. This humble beginning was the first step in a massive journey.

Success came through specific turning points and bold actions. In 1980, Gou received a major order from Atari to make console joysticks. To find more customers, he spent 11 months traveling across the United States. He was an aggressive salesman who often visited headquarters without an invitation. In 1988, he opened his first factory in Shenzhen, China. This location remains his largest factory today. He grew the business by using vertical integration. This is a process where a company controls many different stages of production itself.

As Foxconn grew, it became more than just a factory. The manufacturing sites became large campuses for the workers. These campuses included housing, dining halls, and medical care facilities. They even had chicken farms to provide food for the cafeterias. In 1996, the company reached a new milestone by building chassis for Compaq desktops. This success led to contracts with other high-profile companies like HP, IBM, and Apple. Today, Foxconn employs a massive workforce of approximately 1.2 million people.

Gou's career has also moved into the complex world of politics. He has expressed various views on how Taiwan should interact with other nations. He has criticized the Taiwan independence movement and supports the 1992 Consensus. This is a framework regarding the relationship between China and Taiwan. He has also called for de-escalation of tensions between China and the United States. Because of his business background, international media sometimes compared him to Donald Trump.

His political journey involved several different attempts to lead. In 2019, Gou joined the Kuomintang (KMT) party to run for president. He famously stated that the sea goddess Mazu instructed him in a dream to run. He finished second in the KMT primary with 27.73% of the vote. After leaving that party, he later re-joined in 2023. He then announced he would run as an independent candidate for the 2024 election. However, he ended that specific campaign in late November 2023.

Beyond manufacturing and politics, Gou has been involved in other industries. He is the main owner of HMD Global, which sells Nokia-branded phones. In 2021, he became the largest shareholder in the biotech company Eirgenix. He has also used his influence to help during global crises. In December 2022, he was credited with helping to lobby the Chinese government. His efforts helped ease the zero-COVID rules during the pandemic. This shows how his business connections reach into many different global systems.

Wealth and charity are also significant parts of his life story. Gou's net worth has changed greatly over the years. In 2016, his net worth was $5.6 billion. By 2017, Forbes listed it at $10.6 billion. As of 2022, he was the sixth wealthiest person in Taiwan. Gou and his wife, Tseng, have made a significant plan for his money. They have decided to give 90% of his wealth away to charity. This commitment shows a major connection between his business success and his desire to help others.
