Hefner's career was driven by a specific sequence of entrepreneurial decisions. In January 1952, he resigned from his position as a copywriter for Esquire magazine. This decision followed a request for a $5 raise that was denied. In 1953, he began gathering capital to start his own venture. He secured a $600 mortgage and raised $8,000 from 45 different investors. His mother provided $1,000 of this total to support her son. The magazine was originally going to be called Stag Party. The first issue was published in December 1953. It featured Marilyn Monroe and sold over 50,000 copies immediately.

Hefner's business model expanded into several distinct areas of entertainment. He served as the chief creative officer of Playboy Enterprises, the parent publishing group. He also hosted television programs to promote a specific lifestyle. These included Playboy's Penthouse, which ran from 1959 to 1960, and Playboy After Dark from 1969 to 1970. He extended the brand's reach through the creation of Playboy Clubs. These clubs were designed to reflect the lifestyle presented in his magazine. His influence moved from print media into television and hospitality.

The origins of Hefner's life were rooted in the American Midwest. He was born on April 9, 1926, in Chicago, Illinois. His father, Glenn Lucius Hefner, worked as an accountant. His mother, Grace Caroline Hefner, worked as a teacher. He grew up in a conservative, Methodist family. Hefner attended Sayre Elementary School and Steinmetz High School. He later served as a writer for a United States Army newspaper from 1944 to 1946. He graduated from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1949. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology with minors in creative writing and art.

Throughout his career, Hefner engaged with significant social and political topics. He used his magazine to host the "Playboy Interview," which began in 1962. Through this, he interviewed notable figures such as Malcolm X in 1963 and Martin Luther King Jr. in 1966. He also worked to make his clubs racially diverse during the 1960s. In 1964, he established the Hugh M. Hefner Foundation to support individual rights in a democratic society. The foundation even funded a prototype for a rape kit to support women's empowerment. However, his views were not always universal, as he spoke against certain feminist movements in 1970.

Hefner's personal life was frequently a subject of public interest and media scrutiny.
