Ancient Indian traditions use special timelines to understand history. These timelines come from important texts called the Itihasa and the Puranas.

The Itihasa includes two famous stories called the Mahabharata and the Ramayana. The Mahabharata tells of a struggle between two groups of cousins. This struggle is known as the Bharata War. The Ramayana tells the story of a prince named Rama. These books are very important to Indian tradition. They share stories about gods, kings, and how the world began.

Many people believe that time moves in large repeating cycles. These cycles are called yugas. There are four yugas in one single cycle. They are the Satya Yuga, Treta Yuga, Dvapara Yuga, and Kali Yuga. Each age has a different length of time. Some texts say a full cycle lasts 4,320,000 human years. The current age is the Kali Yuga, which is a time of darkness. This age began after the departure of Krishna. Some calculations place this start date around February 3102 BCE. This way of seeing time is very different from how we measure years today.

The Puranas are a huge group of books about ancient lore. They were likely written by many different authors over many centuries. These texts include long lists of royal families called genealogies. These lists track kings from the very beginning of time. One very important figure is Vaivasvata Manu. He is described as the father of all humanity. He is the son of the Sun god, Vivasvat. The texts say he had seventy children. These children started famous royal lines like the Solar and Lunar dynasties.

Finding exact dates for these stories is a big task for scholars. There are many different versions of the ancient manuscripts. Sometimes these different versions say different things about when events happened. For example, some people use the Bharata War to mark a change in time. One inscription from 634 AD says the war happened much earlier. Other scholars use math and stars to find different dates. Some suggest the war happened around 1400 BCE. Others look at different clues to suggest even older dates. Because of this, there are many different opinions on the timeline.

Today, people use different tools to study these ancient ideas. Historians use archaeology and science to look at the past. They look at old bones, tools, and even DNA. Some scientists believe certain groups arrived in India after 2000 BCE. This idea sometimes clashes with what the ancient books say. Because of this, there are many lively debates among authors. Some people believe the traditions are an unbroken line of history. Others think the stories are partly mythical. It is a wonderful puzzle that people are still trying to solve.
