Epic (genre)

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

An epic is a very long story. It tells of big adventures and great heroes. Long ago, people told these stories out loud. They were poems that people sang. We call these folk epics. The people who made them are often unknown. Later, people began to write these stories down. These are called literary epics. Writing them down helps the stories last for many years.

An epic hero is a special person. They are often very brave or very strong. The hero represents what a group of people values. The story is also very large in scope. This means the story covers many things. It might deal with the whole world.

Today, we find epics in many places. You can find them in novels, movies, and even video games. Some stories, like Star Wars, are called cinematic epics. Other stories, like The Lord of the Rings, are epic fantasy. These stories often have a huge world or a long history. Some epics are even based on real life. For example, Ernest Shackleton had an epic voyage to Antarctica. We still love these big stories today.
