Employment agency

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

An employment agency helps people find jobs. These groups match workers with bosses. There are two main types of agencies. One type is run by the government. These are public agencies. They help people find work for free. In the United Kingdom, the first was set up in 1871. In the United States, the government started a program in 1933. This was part of the New Deal. Australia also started a public service in 1946.

The other type is a private agency. These are businesses that people pay for help. One old private agency started in 1873. It found teachers for schools in England. In the United States, a man named Fred Winslow started one in 1893.

Some agencies focus on high-level jobs. These are called executive search firms. They find leaders for big companies. Often, the company pays the fee, not the worker. People can also work in different ways. Some work full-time for many hours. Others work part-time for fewer hours. Some people work on a contract. This means they work for a set time to finish a task.
